Scope, eligibility and terms
This Privacy Policy describes how Owed, Inc. ("Owed," "we," "us") collects, uses and discloses personal information when you use our website, mobile and web applications and related services (the "Services"). The Services are intended for United States residents aged 18 or older. By using the Services you agree to this Policy and to our Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.
1. Personal information we collect
A. Information you give us directly
- Account details — name, mobile number, email address, and password or one-time codes.
- Claimant information — mailing address, date of birth, and any details a settlement requires (for example, purchase dates, account identifiers, or the last four digits of a payment card) so we can pre-fill and submit claim forms.
- Eligibility answers — your responses to our questions about products, services and companies you have used.
- Documents — receipts, confirmations or other proof you choose to upload for claims that require it.
- Payment information — if you buy a paid plan, our payment processor collects your card details; we receive only a token, the card type and last four digits.
- Communications — messages you send to support, survey responses and reviews.
B. Information we obtain automatically
- Device and usage data — IP address, device identifiers, browser and OS, pages viewed, features used, referring URLs, and crash logs.
- Approximate location — derived from your IP address (used to determine state-specific eligibility and to comply with state privacy laws).
- Cookies and similar technologies — see Section 8.
C. Information we get from other sources
- Connected email (optional) — if you connect an inbox, we scan for purchase confirmations and receipts from companies with open settlements. We do not read unrelated messages, and we store only the extracted purchase details (merchant, date, amount, order ID), never message bodies.
- Settlement administrators and law-firm partners — claim status, approval and payout information for claims you filed through Owed.
- Identity-verification and fraud-prevention providers — signals that help us confirm you are a real person and prevent duplicate claims.
D. Demographic information
Some settlements are limited to a class defined by age, state of residence or similar characteristics. Where required, we may ask for such information solely to determine eligibility.
2. How we use your information
A. To provide our Services
- match you with settlements you may qualify for and estimate payouts;
- pre-fill, submit and track claims on your behalf;
- send verification codes, deadline reminders, status updates and payout notifications;
- process payments for paid plans; and
- provide customer support.
B. For administrative and business purposes
- detect and prevent fraud, duplicate or ineligible claims, and abuse;
- improve, test and personalize the Services and develop new features;
- send marketing about Owed and new settlements (you can opt out at any time); and
- comply with legal obligations, court orders and administrator requirements.
3. How we may share or disclose your information
A. To provide our Services
We share claimant information with settlement administrators, courts and law-firm partners when you ask us to file or check a claim, and with service providers (hosting, SMS/email delivery, payment processing, analytics, identity verification, customer support) who process data on our behalf under contract.
B. With your direction or consent
For example, when you connect an email account or ask us to share information with a partner.
C. To protect us or others
We may disclose information to comply with law, respond to legal process, enforce our Terms, or protect the rights, property or safety of Owed, our users or the public. We may also transfer information as part of a merger, acquisition, financing or sale of assets.
D. Sale or sharing of personal information
We do not sell personal information for money. We may "share" limited identifiers (such as hashed email or device data) with advertising partners for cross-context behavioral advertising as defined by state law; you can opt out as described in Section 4.
Google API Services user data notice
If you connect a Google account, Owed's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use Gmail data only to identify purchase-related messages relevant to open settlements; we never use it for advertising and never allow humans to read it except with your explicit consent for support or as required by law.
4. Your privacy choices and rights
A. Mechanisms to control your information
- Marketing emails — use the unsubscribe link in any message.
- Text messages — reply STOP to any Owed text.
- Connected email — disconnect at any time from Settings → Connections; we delete extracted purchase data within 30 days.
- Cookies — adjust your browser settings or use our cookie preferences control.
- Do Not Sell or Share — toggle "Do not sell or share my personal information" in Settings, or email privacy@owed.example. We honor Global Privacy Control signals.
B. Accessing and correcting your information
You can view and edit your account and claimant details in the app. You can delete your account from your profile — this permanently deletes your data except where we must retain it for legal, tax or fraud-prevention reasons.
C. State-specific privacy rights
Depending on your state, you may have the right to know what personal information we collect and how it is used and shared; the right to access a copy of your data; the right to request deletion of your personal information; the right to correct inaccurate personal information; the right to opt out of sales, sharing and targeted advertising; and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. To exercise a right, email privacy@owed.example or use the in-app controls. We will verify your identity before acting on a request.
D. Your right to appeal
If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision. We will respond within the period required by your state's law.
E. Complaints to a data-protection authority
You may also lodge a complaint with your state attorney general or applicable privacy regulator.
5. How we protect your information
We use administrative, technical and physical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the data, including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and regular security reviews. No system is completely secure; please keep your verification codes private and let us know immediately if you suspect unauthorized access.
6. International transfer of personal information
We are based in the United States and process data there. If you access the Services from elsewhere, you understand your information will be transferred to and processed in the U.S.
7. Personal information retention period
We keep personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Services, comply with legal obligations (for example, claim records that administrators require us to retain), resolve disputes and enforce our agreements. Extracted email purchase data is retained only while relevant to an open or pending settlement.
8. Cookies and other technologies
We use cookies, local storage, pixels and SDKs to keep you signed in, remember preferences, measure how the Services are used and, with your consent where required, deliver and measure advertising. You can control cookies through your browser; disabling essential cookies may prevent parts of the Services from working.
9. Children using or accessing the Services
The Services are not directed to children under 18 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Some settlements cover purchases made by minors; in those cases a parent or guardian provides the information and files on the minor's behalf. If you believe a child has provided us information directly, contact privacy@owed.example and we will delete it.
10. Changes to our Privacy Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will post the revised Policy here with a new "Last modified" date and, for material changes, notify you by email or in the app.
11. Third-party websites and applications
The Services link to settlement-administrator sites, payment processors and other third parties whose privacy practices we do not control. Review their policies before providing information.
