A payment election is the choice you make on a claim form about how you want your settlement money, such as check, PayPal or direct deposit.
What it means
A payment election is a choice you make when you file a claim about how, or in what form, you want to be paid. Most often it is the payment method: a paper check, direct deposit, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, a virtual prepaid card or something similar. The options you see depend on the settlement.
In some settlements the election is between benefits instead. A data breach settlement may let you pick a cash payment or credit monitoring, and another may offer free service months or cash. Read what each choice is worth before you choose, because the decision may be final once your claim is accepted.
If you skip the election, many forms default to a check mailed to the address you gave. Payments go to the details you typed, so double-check your email, phone and address.
What it means for you
Pick the method you are most likely to actually receive. A digital payment is faster and cannot get lost in the mail, but only if your email or account details are right and you watch for the message. A check can sit uncashed or go to an old address. Use details you will still have in a year. If you choose a bank transfer, enter account information only on the official settlement website. If you need to change your choice, contact the administrator before payments go out.
Example
Say a claim form lets you pick a check, PayPal or a virtual card. You choose PayPal and enter the email tied to your account, typing it twice to catch typos. Months later, an email from the administrator arrives with a link to accept the payment. You accept it right away, since payment emails can expire.
FAQ
Sometimes. Contact the administrator through the official settlement website as early as you can, before payments are issued. Each settlement sets its own rules, and some treat the choice as final.
Many claim forms default to a paper check mailed to the address you entered. Others require you to choose before you can submit. Check the form, and make sure your address is current.
