What was recalled

The product is Hodo Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu, an 8 oz (227 g) retail unit sold in printed film packaging, retail UPC 850565007842. Hodo's notice lists three pack formats: a 6-count case (case UPC/GTIN 850565007811), a 30-count case and the single retail unit. Only select production lots are involved, and Hodo says no other Hodo products are included in the recall.

People, citing the company, put the volume at more than 10,000 cases. Hodo's own page does not state a case count, so that figure is the company's announcement as reported, not a number you can check on the notice.

The timeline matters because the recall is older than the headlines. Hodo sent an urgent recall notice to its consignees (wholesalers, distributors and retailers) on Aug. 7, 2026, asking them to pull product and respond by Aug. 10. Its consumer statement is dated Aug. 31, 2026, and that is when coverage spread, including a People story on Sept. 1 and an r/news thread that passed 5,400 upvotes, with vegan and local subreddit threads adding hundreds more. FDA has not posted a company announcement or an enforcement entry for it as of publication; the details here come from Hodo's notice and People's report.

Why it was recalled

Hodo says printing ink from the product packaging may have migrated into the product. According to the company's statement, the problem surfaced when Hodo observed discoloration during scale-up of a new product; it then ran additional testing on Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu in printed film packaging and saw apparently similar results.

The cause is still under investigation; based on currently available information, Hodo says it is evaluating whether chili oil and heat may have contributed to potential migration from the printed film packaging into the product. The notice does not identify the ink, quantify how much may have transferred or describe any health effects, and this article does not add any.

That makes it a different kind of recall from the pathogen actions that dominate FDA's list, such as the bettergoods pistachio nut butter recall or the 2026 sprout outbreak: the concern is a substance that should not be in the food, not an organism.

Where it was sold

Hodo says the recalled lots were distributed to wholesale distributors, retail locations and directly to consumers in 29 states between Jan. 16, 2026 and July 16, 2026: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. The notice lists the distribution area as United States only.

Neither Hodo's notice nor the People report names specific grocery chains, so this article does not either. Hodo supplies grocery stores, quick-serve restaurants and other food service operators, and the notice went to wholesalers and distributors as well as retailers, so the product could have reached any store in those states. If you bought it in those states during that window, check the lot code rather than assuming your store was not involved.

How to identify the recalled tofu

Hodo's recall page includes a photo marking the lot code location: it is printed along the left edge of the front of the package, beside the nutrition panel. Match the code against the table below, which is transcribed from the affected-lot table on Hodo's recall page. Lot codes track the manufacture date (260114 was made on 01/14/2026), and three dates also have a recalled "A" variant.

Many earlier lots have use-by dates that have passed, but the later lots run to dates as late as Nov. 14, 2026, so packages could still be in refrigerators and freezers. If your code is close to but not exactly one of these, or the print is hard to read, contact Hodo for help identifying an affected product and confirm against the company's page.

Reported illnesses

No illnesses or injuries have been reported to date, according to Hodo's consumer statement dated Aug. 31, 2026. The Aug. 7 notice to distributors went further, saying Hodo was not aware of any reported illnesses, injuries, adverse health effects or product-defect complaints associated with the affected product.

Hodo's notice contains no health-effects language about the ink itself, and neither does this article. If you ate the product and have a concern, talk to your healthcare provider; problems with a food can be reported to FDA through its Report a Problem page. Keep the package if you still have it; the lot code is what anyone looking into a complaint will ask for.

What consumers should do

Hodo's instructions are specific. Consumers who have any recalled product should not consume it. They may return the product to the original place of purchase for a full refund, or visit Hodo's recall page to request a product voucher or coupon to redeem for a replacement product.

Hodo says updates and additional recall information will be posted on the same page. Retailers and distributors have separate instructions in the Aug. 7 notice: quarantine affected product and wait for Hodo's written disposition instructions rather than returning or destroying it.
