Costco refund policy explained: windows, exceptions and how to ask
Quick answer

Short answer. The Costco refund policy is one of the most generous in retail: most items can be returned for a full refund at any time, with no time limit. Electronics and major appliances have a 90-day window from delivery. Memberships can be refunded 100% at any point during the year. A handful of categories — cigarettes, alcohol where prohibited, custom products, and certain gift-card-like items — are final sale.

The basic rule: satisfaction guaranteed, no time limit

Costco's return policy has two headline promises. First, on membership: if you're unhappy, you can cancel and get a full refund of your annual fee at any time during the membership year. Second, on merchandise: Costco guarantees your satisfaction and will refund the purchase price on almost everything — with no formal deadline.

That's genuinely rare. Most big-box retailers cap returns at 30, 60 or 90 days. Costco does not, for the vast majority of SKUs. In practice, that means a blender you bought two years ago that stopped working, patio furniture that faded in a single season, or a mattress that turned out to be uncomfortable are all generally accepted. The store manager has discretion, and truly abusive patterns (returning consumables months later, or repeatedly returning the same category) can lead to warnings or membership revocation, but the default posture is to say yes.

Two exceptions rewrite the timeline: electronics and major appliances (90 days from delivery) and a short list of final-sale categories covered below.

The 90-day list: electronics and major appliances

The single most-missed detail in Costco's policy is the 90-day window on higher-ticket electronics and appliances. The clock starts on the date you received the item — not the purchase date, which matters for shipped orders that arrive weeks later. After 90 days, you're generally outside Costco's return window and into manufacturer warranty territory (plus the free Costco Concierge tech support and the second-year warranty extension that Costco tacks on top of the manufacturer's).

The categories in the 90-day bucket include televisions, projectors, computers (desktops and laptops), tablets, smart watches, cameras, camcorders, drones, cellular phones (with additional carrier terms), and major appliances like refrigerators, freezers, ranges, cooktops, dishwashers, washers and dryers.

Returning without a receipt (it usually works)

You don't need a paper receipt to return something to Costco. Because every purchase is tied to your membership number, the store can look up your order history and reissue the refund to the original tender. That's true for both warehouse and Costco.com purchases; online orders show up under your account at Costco.com/OrderStatus and can typically be returned in-warehouse regardless of where you bought them, with two big exceptions: appliances that were delivered (often handled through Costco Logistics) and heavy or oversized items, which may require a scheduled pickup.

If the item was a gift and you don't have the giver's membership, the warehouse may still process it — usually as a Costco Shop Card (store credit) at the current selling price rather than cash back. Bring a photo ID; the register will scan it as part of Costco's fraud checks. Refunds hit the original payment method: credit cards in 3–10 business days, debit in 3–5, cash immediately at the register, and Shop Card refunds stay on Shop Card.

What's actually final sale (short list)

Very few items at Costco are truly non-returnable. The exceptions to remember are:

  • Cigarettes and alcohol where state law prohibits returns.
  • Products with a limited useful life expectancy, like tires and batteries, which have their own warranties rather than a satisfaction return.
  • Custom and personalized products — photo prints, engraved gifts, custom-cut blinds, hearing aids fitted to you, custom cakes.
  • Gold bars, silver coins and other precious-metal bullion, and gift cards, Shop Cards and airline tickets.
  • Live plants after a limited period, and cut flowers.

Special-order Kiosk products (custom windows, mattresses, closets) can generally be refunded for defects but not for buyer's remorse. Diamond rings of 1.00 carat or more get a special 48-hour authentication window: bring the diamond and paperwork within two days and Costco will send it out for verification before completing the return.

Everything else — even a half-eaten rotisserie chicken you didn't love — is technically returnable, though warehouse managers will (rightly) push back on obvious abuse.

How to actually get your refund

You have three paths: in-warehouse (fastest), Costco.com self-service (best for shipped orders and heavy items), or phone. Warehouse returns are handled at the Returns desk near the entrance — no line management app, just walk up with the item and your membership card.

  1. In-warehouse: bring the item, all included accessories, your membership card and a photo ID. Head to the Returns desk. If it's an electronics item, the associate will check the 90-day date.
  2. On Costco.com: sign in, open Orders & Returns, pick the order and click Return Items. Choose refund or replacement, print the prepaid UPS label (Costco pays return shipping on most items), and drop off.
  3. For heavy or delivered items (appliances, furniture, mattresses): use Costco.com's Return an Item flow and select Schedule a Pickup. Costco Logistics will arrange a home pickup.
  4. If your order shipped via Costco Grocery (perishables), damaged or missing items are refunded via Chat or 1-800-955-2292 — you usually don't need to send anything back.
  5. Refund posts to the original payment method: cash back immediately at the register, credit card 3–10 business days, Shop Card refunds stay on Shop Card.
Tip: If you paid with the Costco Anywhere Visa, your refund can take an extra billing cycle to appear because Citi processes the reversal. Keep the return receipt until it clears.

Membership refunds and price adjustments

A Gold Star membership ($65 as of 2026) or Executive membership ($130) is fully refundable at any time — walk into the Membership counter and ask. Executive members who don't earn back their fee in 2% rewards get an automatic refund of the difference at renewal, so canceling mid-year usually isn't necessary.

Price adjustments are separate from returns. If an item you bought in-warehouse or online drops in price within 30 days, Costco will refund the difference. In-warehouse, bring your receipt to the Returns desk. Online, request the adjustment through Customer Service on Costco.com. Promotional prices, clearance and manager markdowns are usually eligible; "limit-per-member" deals and instant rebates that were already applied are not.

Costco also honors manufacturer recalls for a full refund regardless of the 90-day window, and the Concierge Service (1-866-861-0450) resolves electronics warranty issues in years one and two before you'd ever need to escalate. For consumer-refund escalations that Costco can't fix, our guide to filing a class action claim covers the next steps when a defect affects many buyers.

When Costco says no: your options

It's rare, but it happens — usually with electronics past 90 days, a member with a heavy return history, or an item deemed abusively used. Start with the warehouse manager, calmly and with facts (delivery date, defect, what you tried). If that fails, call Costco Member Services at 1-800-774-2678 and ask for a case number.

If your card was charged for something defective and Costco won't help, you have external levers. File a chargeback with your credit-card issuer under "merchandise not as described" — you generally have 60–120 days from the statement, and issuers usually side with cardholders on defect claims. File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and, for pattern issues, your state attorney general's consumer protection division. The FTC takes complaints too — they don't resolve individual disputes but they build enforcement cases.

Finally, some product defects turn into class actions. It's worth checking open settlements for your product category — you may already be eligible for a payout. This is not legal advice; for large disputes, consult a consumer-rights attorney.
